Summer may be winding down, but there’s still lots of gardening time left and opportunities to get some great ideas and plants for your garden.
One of those opportunities is set for Saturday, September 14 when the Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County present their 17th annual Gathering of Gardeners at the Eisenhart Auditorium, Rochester Museum and Science Center, 657 East Avenue in Rochester.
Entitled “Smart Garden Choices! Grow it, Admire it and Sometimes Eat it,” the symposium features nationally known garden experts Barry Glick and Karen Bussolini.
Glick is the founder of Sunshine Farm and Gardens, a commercial nursery in West Virginia which has an on-site state-of-the art tissue culture laboratory producing unusual plants for commerce. In addition to propagating thousands of plants, Glick is an author and speaker.
Bussolini says she has gardened as long as she can remember and is a widely-published garden photographer, speaker, writer, NOFA-accredited Organic Land Care Professional and eco-friendly garden coach. Her work explores the many ways gardening connects people to their place on earth and to each other.
Barry Glick will present “Woodland Wonders” and “Destination Helleborus.” Bussolini will present “Designing with Elegant Silvers,” and the “Edible/Ornamental Garden.”
“Master Gardener volunteers of Monroe County are excited to bring Barry Glick and Karen Bussolini to Rochester,” says Karen Klingenberger, Consumer Horticulture Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County and event coordinator for the symposium.
“The day of talks and especially our Parking Lot Sale will be sure to please any gardener looking for inspiration during the last days of summer,” she says. “We have vendors selling plants and garden objects from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The sale is open to the public, there is no need for a ticket for that.”
Vendors include Amanda’s Garden, Springwater, New York, specializing in woodland wildflowers; Coldwater Pond Nursery, Phelps; Cooks Nursery, Dunkirk, specializing in hostas from dwarf to extra large including some exclusive varieties; Garden Gems, Penfield; Grandpa’s Nursery and Gardens, Sodus (exclusive event under-writer) specializing in perennials, shrubs and dwarf conifers; Michael Hannen, Rochester, specializing in rare and unusual perennials; Holmes Hollow Farm, Victor, specializing in unusual perennials, flowering trees, shrubs and ornamental grasses; Oriental Garden Supply, Pittsford, specializing in conifers, Japanese maples and bamboo, and Pheasant Landing Nursery, Ontario, specializing in unusual deciduous and conifer species.
General admission tickets are $50/person and are available to purchase online at www.gatheringofgardeners.com until September 10. Klingenberger says tickets are also available the day of the event.
Box lunches are optional and will be available for $10. A raffle will also be held the day of the symposium. Winning ticket holders must pick up their items at the end of the day.
