Former Brockport Rotarian presents program on India travels
Brockport Rotary President John Egan is shown thanking Carol and Mo Beers for the informative presentation based on the couple’s recent trip to India on behalf of Rotary International (RI).
A former Brockport Club president, Mo Beers is now president of his Southport, NC club. The Beers (he is a SUNY award winning professor while she was a noted Brockport CSD teacher) retired to NC about seven years ago. However, they are world travelers, who on this trip helped represent Rotary International by helping with polio immunizations in India.
The Beers showed photos of their work and sights such as the Taj Mahal. Despite the Indian government’s success in its polio fight, much needs to be done in this nation of huge numbers of poor people. The Beers talked of their NC club’s contributions of hand bicycles and money for cataract surgery that allow people to see again. Surprisingly, $100 can let five people see again. Because of the lack of money and numbers needing surgery, only one eye is done. Still, that allows people to function in the sighted world. Other needs are for artificial limbs (they are quickly, simply and cheaply made of PVC type of materials).
Brockport Rotary Club meets at Fazool’s on most Thursdays at 6 p.m.
