BISCO grant provides safer walking and biking for school children
The Walk! Bike! Brockport! (WBB) group has received a $10,000 donation from the Brockport Integrated Service and Community Organization (BISCO). A check was presented to Dr. Jim Goetz by BISCO President Greg Lund at the October 10 meeting of the WBB organization that promotes walking and biking in the Brockport area.
The funds will go to WWB’s “Safe Routes to School” project headed by Dr. Goetz who also organizes the annual “Walk to School Day” held recently. Dr. Goetz said the BISCO donation will fund traffic control installations that will improve safety conditions for walkers and bikers at the sharp curve on the campus drive in front of Barclay School. A “speed table” is being purchased to slow car traffic on the curve; it is about eight feet wide and can be removed in winter. Speed signs will be purchased for this segment of the drive. The BISCO funds will also purchase a large bike rack at Hill School where the need has been observed. The traffic control and bike security are a first step in fulfilling WWB’s charge to find ways to make walking and biking safer for children in the community. Looking ahead with a broader vision, WWB is discussing a possible master plan for walking and biking in the greater Brockport area.
The current plan using the BISCO grant was developed by a committee appointed by Dr. Goetz, consisting of Bill Andrews (Village Board), Danielle Windus (Town Board), Harry Donahue (Dept. of Public Works), Frank Short (The College at Brockport), Rob Banzer (Brockport Central School District), Daniel Varrenti (Police Chief), Pat Baker (BISCO), Harry Shifton (WBB) and Dan Hawken (Village representative), plus Dr. Goetz.
