Proclamation recognizes St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
The Brockport Board of Trustees approved a proclamation recognizing St. Luke’s Episcopal Church’s 175th anniversary (built in 1856).
Among historically significant elements noted in the proclamation were the building’s listing on the NYS Registry of Historic Sites, the receipt of the Landmark Society of Western New York Stewardship Award and the preservation of stained glass windows created by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The bell in the tower was the same bell that was used to call the village’s firefighters to douse fires and save lives before the days of telecommunications.
St. Luke’s served the local community as a hospital, supported the humanitarian efforts of the local chapter of the American Red Cross during World War II; and today is designated a National Jubilee Center in recognition of its numerous ministries, hosting the community’s ecumenical Clothes Center and Food Shelf, the monthly Harvest Kitchen, serving food and sharing fellowship with those in need or seeking community as well as North Porch, an infant clothing service for new moms in need.
