Brockport Rotary is looking for a few good orators

The deadline for the annual Rotary District 7120 Oratorical Contest for high school juniors in the Brockport Central School District is December 13 for the preliminary contest which takes place on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the weekly Rotary meeting. Juniors present a five minute speech on how they will live ethically, using Rotary’s Four Way Test –
•Is it the truth?
•Is it fair to all concerned?
•Will it build good will and better friendships?
•Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Participants compete for scholarships to colleges and universities in District 7120 for up to a total of $40,000 for four years. The winners of the local contest then must give their speech at the semi finals. Up to twelve high school juniors will be selected for the final contest at St. John Fisher College on March 23, 2014. All juniors, who live in the district and apply for the contest by December 13 will be able to take advantage of a speech coach provided by the Brockport Rotary. All fees are paid for by the Brockport Rotary.

Visit www.clubrunner.ca/portal/home.aspx?did=7120 for information on the contest. Click on “Youth Services,” then on “Oratorical Contest.” Past winners of the contest are on You tube which offers a good idea of what a speech should include. Information packets are available from Mrs. Sime in the Brockport High School First Floor Guidance office, as well as from Lorraine D’Angelo at ladylore20@yahoo.com.
