Hilton United Methodist Church to host Service of the “Longest Night”

The Hilton United Methodist Church, 21 West Avenue, will host its first Service of the “Longest Night” on Sunday, December 20 at 6 p.m. The service is scheduled around the winter solstice – the longest night of the calendar year.

“We’ve lost three members of our congregation in less than a month,” said the Rev. Jennifer Green. “That coupled with everything that has happened in Paris and around the world made us realize that a service that focuses on upholding our congregation and the community is timely.”

Anyone who has experienced divorce, an empty nest, illness or loss of any kind is welcome to attend the service, which will include lighting candles and the Advent Wreath, singing Advent hymns, praying together and celebrating the Holy Communion. Those who know someone currently facing a difficult time are encouraged to bring him or her to the service as well.

“This time of joy and expectation can often overshadow the pain and hurt many experience during the season…,” said Green, who has been pastor at Hilton United Methodist Church since 2008. “This church is intentional about upholding members of the community in whatever season of life they may find themselves in.”

Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, call 392-8761 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Worship times include: Sunday Worship from 10 to 11 a.m. (childcare provided) and  Sunday School for children and adults from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
