Riga Legion lays wreaths to honor veterans
The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 and its Auxiliary took part in the national Wreaths Across America project in early December by placing wreaths on the graves of Mary Noone and her son, Harvey, who died in WWI in France. Their graves are located in the Churchville Cemetery. Assisting local Legion members was C/SMSgt Rebecca Hartman, Civil Air Patrol.
Mary Noone donated money in her will for the building of the Riga Legion Post and it is named in honor of her son. Legion leaders say this year they decided to place a wreath on the grave of the Post’s namesake as part of the national project.
The Wreaths Across America project began about 30 years ago with the mission to remember, honor and teach. Each year a wreath is placed on every grave at Arlington National Cemetery on a designated Saturday in December, and now WAA partners with groups like the Civil Air Corps to place wreaths on the graves of veterans across the United States.
Legion members say the wreaths placed on the Noone graves as part of Wreaths Across America are in addition the wreaths placed by the Auxiliary at each cemetery, Churchville Elementary and the library every year.
