Morgan-Manning house to showcase “America’s Songs”

“America’s Songs: The Great American Songbook and the City” will be the topic of Michael Lasser’s presentation on Thursday, April 28, at the historic Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street in Brockport, starting at 7:30 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, is free and open to the public with free refreshments served.

Mr. Lasser is the host of PBS’s nationally-syndicated public radio show Fascinatin’ Rhythm and author of three books about American music. He will speak about his books and some of the history of popular music in America. Following the presentation, Mr. Lasser will sign and sell his books.

With lighthearted and insightful commentary, “Fascinatin’ Rhythm reveals America to itself through popular songs,” the website states (www.american-song.com/). The show won a 1994 George Peabody Award, the most prestigious award in broadcasting, for its “celebration of American culture.” It has been on the air since November 1980, and heard on as many as 110 stations from coast to coast.

What distinguishes Fascinatin’ Rhythm from other radio shows that play similar songs is the program’s weekly theme (a type of song, a composer or lyricist, a performer, or theme), the variety of its music, and what the Peabody Award citation called Michael Lasser’s “sparkling commentary.”
