Search for family ancestry at the Community Free Library
Funded by a grant from Senator Robert Ortt, the Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, Holley, will provide free access to Ancestry.com, the world’s largest for-profit genealogy research program from June 1, 2016 through June 1, 2017.
To aid in family history research, the library will offer two classes in June, free to community members. On Monday, June 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Dee Robinson will present a program on how to use Ancestry.com. Although the class will not be hands-on, community members who attend will learn how to navigate the site and use it to their best advantage.
As follow-up, a second class, “Digging up your ancestors online” will take place on Monday, June 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Presenters Melissa Ierlan (Clarendon Historian) and Marsha DeFillips, (Holley/Murray Historian) will introduce patrons to online sources such as Fulton’s Postcards; handouts will also be available.
For the year of the grant, Ancestry.com will be accessible and free to community members on library computers during regular library hours. In addition to using the normal library computers, two laptops will be available for genealogical research within the library, also purchased through Senator Ortt’s grant.
The programs may be offered a second time depending on community interest and turnout.
