German Fest returns to Spencerport
The 112th Rochester Area Fest will be held at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field on Friday, August 12 from 4 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, August 13 from noon to 11 p.m.
The Federation of German American Societies Inc. and its ten affiliated clubs that represent various facets of German culture will present the event. Each club contributes volunteers to help set up, service and clean up for the occasion. They are thankfully supported by a number of other volunteers who simply enjoy being a part of the Fest.
The “Lively” Almdudlers, a Rochester based band, will again play each evening from 7 to 11 p.m. New to our fest will be the Auslaenders (Outsiders) from Buffalo on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. They are basically German but don’t be surprised if you hear some country and western or Jimmy Buffet pieces from them. On Saturday afternoon another Buffalo based band, The Frankfurters, will make their first appearance at our Fest playing from 2 till 6 p.m
On Thursday, August 11 our club ladies, joined by some volunteers, will transform 800 pounds of Colby Farms potatoes into German Potato salad. Vinegar, salad oil, onions and some “secret” blend of seasonings are blended into a delicious side dish to supplement the obligatory sauerkraut. Bratwurst, bauernwurst, cheddar wurst, hot dogs, hamburgers and leberkase will round out the typical German festival food.
Adult beverages will be wine and beer, including a “1516” special brew to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity Law (for beer brewing). A variety of soft drinks and water will be available in addition to snacks such as pretzels and landjaeger, a dried sausage stick. Dessert will include coffee, kuchen, pies and ice cream.
The Glueckshafen “happy spot” prize stand will return as well as a basket table. We also expect to have a table which will offer some German memorabilia items such as beer steins, figurines, etc. You can test your skill on the beer slide or your strength at the Stein holding and the keg throwing contests. A children’s activity corner is also planned.
Admission costs $5 per adult and children under 16 get in free if accompanied by an adult. We look forward to welcoming all of you. “Prosit.”
