Harvesting hops was a pleasant time in mid-19th century New York where growing hops provided big business. Workers sang as they worked, and feasted and danced when they finished.

Join in the celebration September 5 at Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Hop Harvest Festival as the hop cones are collected by hand and festivities abound around the historic village.

Discover how hops were used, not only in brewing beer, but also in dyeing, as medicine and in making beer bread (available for sampling).

Taste sausages cooked in the museum’s Fat Ox Ale, sauerkraut, a variety of beers and even beer fudge. Or dine on a meal of sausages, sauerkraut, salt potatoes, beer bread and root beer in the historic Hosmer’s Inn.

Other activities include rolling a barrel through an obstacle course, joining an old-fashioned sack race and making hop-scented sweet bags. Craft beers will be available for purchase.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Special event admission costs $20 adult; $12 youths 4-16; $17 seniors 62+ and students with ID; free to children three and under.
