Community invited to fire safety E.D.I.T.H. Drill
October is Fire Prevention Month, and Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated from October 8 to October 14. On Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 p.m., the community is invited to participate in the annual E.D.I.T.H. Drill (Exit Drill In The Home) sponsored by the Spencerport Fire Department. This proven fire safety and life-saving exercise has been promoted in Spencerport for many years. It has saved lives here and throughout the nation.
All residents are encouraged to take part in the drill by first talking with their families about why to practice this life saving drill, and what lessons are learned from doing it. The drill addresses the subject of fear, helping everyone to understand that the more they understand fire and how it can affect their lives, and the actions they need to take to prevent and respond to fire, the safer everyone will be.
The fire siren will be sounded at 6:30 p.m. and fire trucks will be taken into several residential areas to be on hand for questions or assistance to families that will be participating in the drill. Community members can participate in the drill even if they do not see a fire truck. For many, it will be an eye-opening activity, checking smoke alarms, and listening to the thoughts of various members of the family.
Remember to: make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are functioning properly; practice two ways out of every room; go to a meeting place outside the building; keep matches and lighters away from small children.
