Wondering why the canal was refilled?
The filling of water in the normally drained portion of the western Erie Canal is associated with culvert inspections and cleaning, so the Canal Corporation can assure the culverts are ready for the next navigation season. The Canal was first dewatered to inspect and clean the culverts, located in Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties, and then refilled to verify the integrity of the culverts after the cleaning. The inspections of the re-watered culverts took place last week and the Erie Canal is now in the process of being dewatered for the winter. Dewatering takes up to 14 days. Information provided by canal spokesperson.
