“Stage Whispers” takes on the actor’s age-old chant “Broadway or Bust!”

Jeanne Paulsen, a Tony Award-nominated actress, is a member of the cast of Geva Theatre Center’s One House Down. Though she has appeared on Broadway several times, the bulk of her career has been spent on stages across the country. The next installment of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies’ “Stage Whispers: Conversations with Theatre Professionals” will examine whether an actor’s career must rely on New York City in a talk entitled “Do All Roads Lead to Broadway?” The talk will take place on Thursday, April 26 at 10 a.m. in The College at Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, 180 Holley Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Though perceived as a mecca, the percentage of professional actors who actually appear on Broadway is relatively small. Foregoing electronic media, a stage actor can work consistently, and even achieve some notoriety, working in regional theatres (such as Geva) from coast to coast. While these theatres have their own hierarchy, they are excellent training grounds for any working actor, and Paulsen will share her experiences coming up through the ranks.

Paulsen received her Tony Award nomination for her work in Robert Schenkkan’s The Kentucky Cycle, starring Stacy Keach. Also on Broadway, she performed the role of Ann Putnam in The Crucible, starring Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. Paulsen has performed in theatres nationwide including three productions of King Charles III at Seattle Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theater, and Shakespeare Theatre Company.  She has also appeared at the McCarter Theatre Center (The Figaro Plays), Denver Center Performing Arts Theatre Company and many, many more. She is making her Geva debut in One House Over.

The “Stage Whispers” series is sponsored by The College at Brockport’s Department of Theatre and Music Studies as part of their alliance with Geva Theatre Center. The series gives community members insight into the process of professional theatre artists. For more information, call 395-2496.
