A Dog Day Afternoon at GCV&M
Genesee Country Village & Museum is going to the dogs on Saturday, August 26. And quite happily.
In a salute to the current “Working Like a Dog” exhibit in the John L. Wehle Gallery – with a nod to National Dog Day – the museum will explore the special bond between man and canine with demonstrations by canine professionals, themed games and crafts and visits with some famous dogs.
Visitors can see how dogs have been herders, hunters and guardians; have labored pulling carts and carriages, powered treadmills and turnspits; been tapped by police and the military in rescue and detection; performed as service dogs; and been enjoyed as show dogs or irreplaceable companions.
Promotions include:
•$3 off per person for groups of three or more
•$1 off admission with a donation of a can or bag of food. (This month-long discount cannot be combined with other discounts.)
•Kids who bring a stuffed toy dog will receive a free hot dog (one per person).
Environmental conservation officer Fay A. Fuerch and her dog Handley will demonstrate how she tracks down lost hunters, fugitives and illegally hunted game. (Handley can detect shell casings as well as venison and bear carcasses, whether left in the open or stashed in a freezer.)
Other activities include:
•Sheep herding
•Mini dog show (Genesee Valley Kennel Club)
•Hunting challenges (Kanadasaga & Genesee Valley Kennel Club)
•Demonstrations of tricks and agility (Kanadasaga Kennel Club)
•Free canine face painting (Glamour Girls)
