Monroe County Library System creates digital magazine room
Collecting digital magazines together allows for convenient, easy browsing on library website
Libraries have long embraced the digital age and are continually adding innovations and conveniences to service the members of their community. As another example, Monroe County Library System has digitized the concept of physical reading rooms by creating a specialized eReading Room of magazines. With a library card, residents can browse digital magazines sectioned off from the rest of the catalog. Readers can find this on https://libraryweb.overdrive.com/library/magazines as well as in Libby, the one-tap reading app from OverDrive.
“The Monroe County Library System is excited to offer magazines as part of our wildly popular OverDrive ebook service,” said Sally Snow, Communications Director of Rochester Public Library. “The Libby app makes downloading a title very simple and there are no long wait times for titles. The fact that you can use it with any device is a huge plus and ensures that many of our patrons will be able to take advantage of this great service.” The service has been successful and well received by the community overall. “Checkouts of OverDrive magazines in the first two weeks of the service reached over a thousand. That’s a lot of happy customers,” stated Snow.
Monroe County Library System’s digital collection offers thousands of ebooks, audiobooks and magazines in a variety of genres for all ages. The eReading Room concept was born from the existence of physical spaces in libraries that are designed specifically for special subjects, audiences and formats. Libby, eReading Rooms are called “guides” while the library’s website refers to them as “collections.”
Readers may browse Monroe County Library System’s digital collection, instantly borrow titles and start reading or listening for free with a valid library card. This service is compatible with all major computers and devices. All titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period and there are no late fees. Readers can also download titles onto Libby for offline use.
