Brockport music ensembles gear up for “Spring Music Week 2019”

As the semester draws to a close, there are still plenty of concerts to be had at The College at Brockport. The musical ensembles that are part of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies will be performing in their year-end recitals during “Spring Music Week 2019.” Each of the concerts starts at 7:30 p.m., and will be held in one of the venues in the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Admission for each of the concerts is $5, payable at the door. Contact the department at 395-2496 for more information.

Wednesday, May 1

Karl Stabnau will lead the Brockport Jazz Ensemble in a concert in the Tower Black Box Theatre.

Wednesday, May 8

The Brockport Ensembles concert will feature the Xylophone Ensemble playing a variety of pieces on “non-standard” instruments, such as household products, etc. The Brass Ensemble will also be performing, as will the Chamber Winds, which will play a portion of Charles Gounod’s “Petite Symphonie.” Natalie Sarrazin leads the Xylophones, while Natalie Fuller directs the brass and winds.

Thursday, May 9

The Brockport Concert Band, under the direction of Scott Horsington, will play a side-by-side concert with the Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Philip Briatico. The concert will feature music by Copland, Bernstein, John Williams, and others, and conclude with a combined-group performance of Gustav Holst’s “First Suite” (in E-flat).

Saturday, May 11

Music Week winds down with the Brockport College-Community Orchestra joining forces with the Brockport College-Community Chorus for their spring concert, which will feature Vivaldi’s “Gloria.”  Tickets ($17 general, $12 seniors, $9 students) are available at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, the Tower box office, or by calling 395-2787.

Horsington is “very excited to collaborate with the chorus. It’s been three years since our last joint concert, and both ensembles have developed a great deal since then. This will be a great opportunity to showcase the talents of Brockport students – and community members – as well as the continued growth of Brockport’s music program.”
