Americana and a new adventure at GCV&M

As the summer hits its peak, Genesee Country Village & Museum offers an array of special events and programs to suit any interest. The month begins with a brand-new event with a literary twist, A Novel Weekend: Lewis Carroll. Filled with references to the Alice in Wonderland stories, this weekend will feature a “mad” tea party and games of the Queen’s croquet, where guests can be a part of the action. The event will also include calligraphy lessons and a Wonderland-themed costume contest. A Novel Weekend will run Saturday and Sunday, August 3 and 4 and is sponsored by ESL Charitable Foundation and Kids Out & About.

Beginning Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11, baseball fans can see how the game was played in the 1800s, when “base ball” players caught balls barehanded and umpires wore top hats. At the museum’s replica 19th-century Silver Base Ball Park, visitors can munch on peanuts and popcorn while watching teams from around the U.S. and Canada compete in a round-robin tournament, culminating in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission for the weekend is half price on Saturday and Sunday, offering fans a significant savings on seeing multiple days of play. Sponsorship of the Silver Base Ball Tournament is provided by Land Pro.

The museum will dig into our country’s musical roots during Fiddlers’ Fair on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18, when hundreds of musicians will offer non-stop entertainment on six stages across the grounds. Anyone bringing an instrument to play will receive free admission, and Saturday will have extended hours with a concert by Koehler and Kelly from 4 to 6 p.m. There will also be workshops for student fiddlers, and the Museum will be holding a string and accessories drive to benefit ROCmusic, which offers free, high-quality music instruction to students in grades 1 through 12 in the City of Rochester. Fiddlers’ Fair is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Genesee Country Village & Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the regular season. General admission is $18 adults, $15 seniors, 10 youth, and free for children three and under. Special event pricing may vary, visit the www.gcv.org or call 538-6822 for details.
