Spencerport Canal Museum offers educational experiences
For several years, the Spencerport Canal Museum has been offering educational experiences. This year Director Simon Devenish is expanding the program to include both student and adult groups.
Some of the topics that are covered are: Erie Canal history, the history of the Trolley Station, who owned the land the Canal is on, as well as the history of the Village of Spencerport and the Town of Ogden. Several of the programs include a walking tour of the Village of Spencerport. Groups can ask for specific topics to be discussed and determine how long they would like their experience to be.
One of the new focuses of the educational program is giving fourth grade students the opportunity to experience the history of the Erie Canal. Classes from the Leo Bernabi and Terry Taylor schools have recently participated in field trips with the museum.
Groups from the Chili Seniors and Perinton 55+ Mens Club have also visited recently to take part in some of the adult education programs the museum offers.
School or adult groups interested in scheduling an educational experience should contact the museum at least four weeks in advance to reserve a time. More information and applications are available on the museum website, www.spencerportmuseum.org, or by calling Director Simon Devenish at 352-0942.
The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum is seeing an increase in the number of visitors and boaters, and is always looking for new volunteers to help welcome these visitors.
