A Bowhunting Education course is being offered at the Conservation Club of Brockport, 291 Ladue Road, on Friday, August 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, August 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This course is offered free of charge to persons interested in obtaining a New York State bowhunting privilege. Registered students may obtain the student manual at the club during open trap on Mondays from 4:30 to 8 p.m., or from the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street, Brockport. The manual is also available for download from the DEC website, and downloading directions are provided during the registration process. Students should allow adequate time to prepare the mandatory homework.
The NY Bowhunter Education course is required for hunters who want to use a bow and arrow to hunt deer or bear. Although this course is not required for hunting deer with a crossbow, or for using a bow and arrow to hunt small game or turkey, the DEC encourages hunters to take this course to learn bow and tree stand safety techniques and other New York State mandated content. Students successfully completing the course are issued the Bowhunting Certificate of Qualification required to obtain a bowhunting privilege to accompany a small/large game license.
The Conservation Club of Brockport regularly provides firearms and bowhunting educational opportunities. Some basic trap instruction is offered at Monday afternoon trap shooting which is open to public participation. Additional Hunter Education courses are planned for yet to be announced fall dates.
