Hamlin Recreation offers Bowhunting Education course

A Bowhunting Education course is being offered at the Hamlin Town Hall Recreation Gymnasium, 1658 Lake Road, on Friday, August 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, August 17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This course is offered free of charge to persons interested in obtaining a New York State bowhunting privilege. Register on-line through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at  http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/92278.html.

Registered students may obtain the student manual at the Hamlin Recreation Office during regular office hours. The manual is also available for download from the DEC website, and downloading directions are provided during the registration process. Students should allow adequate time to prepare the mandatory homework.

The NY Bowhunter Education course is required for hunters who want to use a bow and arrow to hunt deer or bear. Although this course is not required for hunting deer with a crossbow, or for using a bow and arrow to hunt small game or turkey, the DEC encourages hunters to take this course to learn bow and tree stand safety techniques and other New York State mandated content. Students successfully completing the course are issued the Bowhunting Certificate of Qualification required to obtain a bowhunting privilege to accompany a small/large game license.

The Hamlin Recreation Department provides fall and spring firearms and bowhunting educational opportunities. Additional Hunter Education courses are planned for October. Hamlin area residents may contact the Recreation Department to pre-register in this and upcoming classes.
