Don Potter’s ANTHOLOGY at the Lyric Theatre
Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 7 p.m.
To a vagabond generation, where is one to find that place of welcome that defines home? When Don Potter arrived in Rochester in the late 1960s with his partner Bat McGrath, that is precisely what they found. Don encountered just the right soil to take root and flourish in. From Rock to Folk, Classical to Jazz, all the elements were there.
Two friendships were especially transformational. Stanley Watson, whose mentoring of Don in technique forever influenced his relationship and abilities with the guitar. And Don’s friendship with Chuck Mangione opened an entirely new world of jazz, orchestras and concert halls, giving Don the privilege to experience and collaborate with a multitude of world-class musicians.
The 1980s brought a geographic and musical shift to Nashville, Country Music, and a career in recording and production; but the tie to Rochester remained unbroken.
The late 1990s found Don venturing into the Worship Music world and a few years of touring casinos and theaters with some of his Country Music friends.
ANTHOLOGY is a distillate of the synergy of all those years of music styles and experiences into an expression that is uniquely Don Potter. He shines in his improvisational gift of breezing in and out between written and spontaneously composed songs.
Don Potter will perform at the Lyric Theatre, 440 East Avenue, Rochester, on Saturday, October 5 at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 ($30 after September 4), and are available at lyrictheatrerochester.org.
