Spencerport’s 2019 Cartons for Christmas
Spencerport’s community project, Cartons for Christmas, sponsored by local churches, is underway this year. Area churches, schools, service organizations, youth groups, businesses and countless individuals come together as community to help those in need. Last year we served 102 local families (414 people) by providing 10,150 items of food, gift cards and 183 toys for young children.
There are three ways you can help:
Families in need – If you know of a family in need, please let us know by October 10 (or earlier). We are limited to the Spencerport/Ogden area. We handle all referrals confidentially.
Donations – Food: We appreciate all donations of food for the Christmas cartons. We cannot distribute expired food. Please check dates before donating. Canned and boxed foods to donate include vegetables, fruit, soups, meat and fish, stuffing, juice, cereal, boxed rice, pasta, bagged flour and sugar. Please no glass items.
Turkeys: Frozen turkeys can be donated, but due to a lack of storage bring them to St. John’s gym promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 7.
Money: It is used to buy perishables such as eggs, butter, cheese, bread and meat. Tops gift certificates are purchased for each of the families.
Toys: New toys for young local children are needed. Beginning November 15, stop in and select an angel off the tree at The Unique Shop, 130 South Union Street; Fowler’s Canaltown Wine & Spirits, 377 South Union Street; or Spencerport Federal Credit Union, 2775 Spencerport Road. Contact Donna Granger at 490-0549 or cartonangels@gmail.com for more information.
An Open House to collect donations will be held Friday, December 6, 3 to 6 p.m. at St. John’s school building gym off Martha Street. Make checks payable to: Cartons for Christmas, c/o Granger and mail to 301 Village Walk Circle, Spencerport, NY 14559.
Personal Service – We will need volunteers to check expiration dates, sort, count, pack food, load cars and deliver the cartons. Volunteer for an hour or more. Call Maureen at 750-5341 to sign up. Assistance in gathering the large number of boxes would be appreciated. Copier paper boxes are the correct size.
Volunteers are needed to:
•Check expiration dates, sort and count, Friday, December 6, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
•Pack, Saturday, December 7, 9 to 11 a.m.
•Load cars, Saturday, December 7, 12:45 to 4 p.m.
•Deliver cartons to families, Saturday, December 7, early afternoon as assigned.
