Free breast cancer screening events
The Cancer Services Program of the Finger Lakes Region (CSP-FLR), serving Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, Yates and Seneca Counties, is hosting breast cancer screening events in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The screening events are open to women age 40 to 64 without insurance.
“The Cancer Services Program of the Finger Lakes Region plays an important role in New York State’s mission to increase access to life-saving breast cancer screening by helping uninsured women get free screenings,” said Michele Tufano, program manager. “We are hosting many screening events in October for women who need a mammogram.”
In addition to breast cancer screening, CSP-FLR also provides cervical and colon cancer screening to eligible New York residents. Monroe County residents can call CSP-FLR at 224-3070 to enroll in the following breast cancer screening events or to get more information.
•Saturday, October 12, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Rochester Regional Health Imaging, Medical Office Building, 1415 Portland Avenue, Suite 190, Rochester.
•Saturday, October 19, 7:30 to 11 a.m., Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, 170 Sawgrass Drive, Rochester.
If the screening test is positive, or abnormal, the CSP will pay for further tests and provide a case manager to guide clients through these additional appointments. If treatment is needed, the CSP helps eligible clients apply for New York State’s Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program, which offers full Medicaid coverage for eligible people throughout the course of their treatment.
“All women should talk with their health care provider about their personal risk for breast cancer. Some women will need to be screened at a younger age or more often than others,” said Tufano. “Of course, any woman who has symptoms or changes in their breasts should see their health care provider immediately. The CSP-FLR can help women without insurance find a regular doctor to talk about screening if it’s needed.”
