H-P Senior Center program details moon mapping for NASA
Hilton-Parma Senior Center holds a monthly program where a local presenter speaks about an interesting topic or history, followed by a pizza lunch. All presentations occur on the fourth Monday of the month (unless otherwise noted) with presentations starting at 10:30 a.m. and a full pizza lunch to follow. Make reservations for Monday, October 17 when the speaker will be Art Cosgrove, a former Kodak employee and a current town of Parma resident. His job was to map the moon for the Apollo Missions. A question and answer session will be available throughout.
In the mid-1960s, Art began working for Eastman Kodak Company (first job at Kodak in the Government area) for NASA. His NASA assignment was as a Video Engineer on the Lunar Orbiter program which was part of the Apollo Program. The Lunar Orbiter project was a modified spacecraft for usage in Deep Space. The robotic missions (five, all highly successful) to the moon were the first US Spacecraft to be placed into Moon Orbit by the USA. The missions took place in 1966 and 1967. The purpose of the missions was photo mapping the moon for general purposes and landing site selection for the Apollo moon landings (1969-1972).
Future presentations include Jim Kennard speaking about the Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario on November 21. Dave Crumb, Village of Hilton Historian, presents a program about the Main Street fire of 1965 on December 19.
Pre-registration is required; the fee is $5 per participant per session. To register and for more information, please contact the staff at the Hilton-Parma Senior Center at 392-9030.
