Movement and Dance Weekend Returns to Nazareth University

The 14th annual Movement and Dance (MAD) Weekend festival returns to Nazareth University from January 22 through 25. The weekend features more than 25 dance-related events, including movement-based workshops, film screenings, discussion panels, informal performance opportunities (able to view and participate in), and live performances. Movement-based workshops hosted by the Nazareth Dance Organization and taught by guest artists, faculty, and alumni start on Thursday, January 22, and continue through Sunday, January 25. 

Boston Dance Theater company will perform Strong Women at Nazareth in Callahan Theater on Friday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. Since its inception, Boston Dance Theater has maintained a deep commitment to amplifying the voices of strong female choreographers of color. Strong Women is an evening of short works that the company commissioned from renowned choreographers Sidra Bell, Rena Butler, Rosie Herrera, Micaela Taylor, and Yue Yin. Tickets to the Boston Dance Theater company are available through the Nazareth Arts Center box office.

On Saturday, January 24, Framing Menerbes, a dance film by New York City artist Daniel Gwirtzman, will make its Rochester premiere at 5:30 p.m. in the Shults Center Forum. The Forum doors open at 5 p.m. The screening is followed by a conversation between the filmmaker, a Rochester native, and the audience. The night culminates with a community mixer/meet-and-greet with the MAD artists from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The MAD Artists’ Showcase, featuring choreography from regional, Massachusetts-, Colorado-, Atlanta-, and NYC-based guest artists (including some Nazareth University alumni), will be held on Sunday, January 25, at 4 p.m., in Callahan Theater – tickets will be sold at the door (cash only).
