Homesteads for Hope Speaker Series

Homesteads for Hope Community Farm is holding its January Speaker Series event on January 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the main house at 2185 Manitou Road. Jamie Weigel will lead an engaging and informative session focused on Self-Direction and the role of a broker.
Self-Direction allows individuals with disabilities to take responsibility for decisions, from hiring caregivers and setting hours to funding specific needs like classes or technology, with support from brokers and family.
This interactive presentation is designed to help individuals and families better understand how Self-Direction works and whether it may be the right fit for them. Attendees will gain clarity on what Self-Direction is, how to get started, what a Broker does, how to build a budget, and strategies for maximizing reimbursements. The session will include Q&A throughout the evening, allowing participants to ask questions and explore real-life scenarios.
Jamie Weigel is a certified Self-Direction Broker serving more than 30 families in the Rochester area. She is a mother of three teenagers, one of whom participates in Self-Direction, and she is also the primary caregiver for her sister with Autism. Jamie serves on the ARC of Monroe Family Reimbursement Committee and is an active member of a long-standing Starbridge support group for parents of children with severe challenges. A passionate and experienced advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Jamie brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work. As she puts it, “I love connecting people to services and supports, helping them overcome obstacles, and supporting them in achieving their goals.”
