Get Active This Winter

FEBRUARY 15 Canalway Challenge

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the free FEBRUARY 15 Canalway Challenge. Participants pledge to complete 15 miles walking, running, hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing anywhere within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor by the end of February to earn rewards, including 15-miler crew socks, a sticker, and a magnet.

Participants can log miles at national, state, and local parks, on the Canalway Trail, or even in their own neighborhoods. Registration is open to individuals, teams, and organizations looking to embrace winter, get active, and explore new places.

“Getting outside and staying active in the winter offers tremendous benefits – from boosting mood and getting needed vitamin D to staying fit,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “But we hope FEBRUARY 15 Challenge participants will also have fun and discover the quiet beauty of the Canalway Corridor in winter.”

FEBRUARY 15 is part of the Canalway Challenge, which is open to people of all fitness levels and offers a range of mileage options, including 1 mile for people with mobility challenges, 15 miles, 90 miles, 180 miles, and 360 miles.

New York State Canal Corporation Deputy Director Rebecca Hughes said, “February can be a tough month for those in the Northeast to get motivated to recreate outside. This challenge serves as a reminder that the Canalway Trail is open year-round for recreation, regardless of the weather. I am sure it will incentivize people to head to the waterway to enjoy some much-needed fresh air and exercise as we eagerly await the arrival of spring.”
