Ogden Assessor Offering Filing Extension for Senior Exemptions

Following State Correspondence Errors

With support from the Ogden Town Board, the Assessor’s Office for the Town of Ogden has announced a conditional filing extension for the Limited Income Senior Exemption following reports of widespread confusion among residents.

The confusion stems from a recent mailing by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance regarding the STAR exemption. The state’s correspondence reportedly informed some seniors that they no longer needed to submit income worksheets to maintain their eligibility. However, the Assessor emphasizes that this change applies exclusively to the STAR program and does not affect the Limited Income Senior Exemption, which still requires an annual renewal application.

Case-by-Case Review Process
While the official statutory deadline for these renewals was March 1, 2026, the Assessor’s Office will now review late applications on a case-by-case basis for residents who missed the date due to this misunderstanding.

To qualify for this late renewal, residents must:
Provide Proof of Receipt: Homeowners must show the original letter received from New York State regarding their STAR exemption.
Demonstrate Misinterpretation: Applicants must show that the state’s messaging directly led to their failure to renew the local Limited Income Senior Exemption by the deadline.

All late renewal applications must be submitted no later than April 1, 2026.
