Ogden to Dedicate WWII Aircraft Watch Tower Historical Marker

The Town of Ogden invites residents to attend a dedication ceremony for a new historical marker recognizing the site of Spencerport’s World War II-era aircraft watch tower.
During World War II, an aircraft watch tower was located on the high elevation of Coolidge Avenue in Spencerport. With major Rochester-area manufacturers such as Kodak and Bausch & Lomb considered potential targets during the war, civilian volunteers across the region played an important role in watching the skies for enemy aircraft.
Local volunteers staffed the Spencerport watch tower, keeping an eye on the skies as part of the community’s contribution to the war effort. Fortunately, no enemy aircraft were ever spotted.
The Town will commemorate this piece of local history with a marker dedication ceremony on Friday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m., between 105 and 111 Coolidge Avenue. Residents are invited to attend.
Speakers will include Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale, Town Historian Jesse Diehl, and Village of Spencerport Mayor Gary Penders, who will help recognize the volunteers who served and the important role the watch tower played in the community during World War II.
