Lakeview Garden Club

Founded in 1960 by Jean Bachman, the Lakeview Garden Club was formed when Bachman invited 16 of her women friends who shared her enthusiasm for gardening to form a club. Currently the club has 28 members, two of them from the original group formed in 1960.

Over the past 57 years the club, through its affiliation with the Federated Garden Clubs of NYS – 7th District, has been involved in many initiatives in the community and in the world. These projects include Water For South Sudan, Rochester Civic Garden Center, Blue Star Memorial at Ontario Beach Park, Greece Historical Society Garden, and The Annual District Candlelight House Tour.

Since 1988 The Lakeview Garden Club has maintained one of the many gardens at the Greece Historical Society located at 595 Long Pond Road, Greece. Responsible for the northeast quadrant of the Historical Society property, in 2015 the Club submitted a proposal to the 7th District Federated Garden Clubs of NYS for a Civic Beautification Grant in the amount of $525 to help finance the revitalization of the Historical Society Garden. Divided into three stages of work, Lakeview Club members and Greece Boy Scout Troop #18, led by scout leaders Kim and Norm Gunkel, completed the project this past Spring.

The Lakeview garden at the Greece Historical Society is mostly perennial and it serves as a “Memory Garden” for those Lakeview members who have passed. The garden includes a Japanese Maple, azaleas, astilbes, ferns, hostas, Macrophylla Hydrangeas, Miss Kim Lilac, Fuchsia Meidland Roses, May Night Salvia, Autumn Joy Sedum and Weigela. Two purple Evision Clematises climb a white arbor and bloomed prolifically this spring. An old time fragrant  Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose graces a trellis donated by a 50 year member. The paving stones for the path through the arbor were an economical “find” at the Town of Greece Transfer Station on Flynn Road. There is a concrete bench and a cast iron chair providing a place for one to sit, reflect, and enjoy the garden.

To maintain the garden Lakeview Garden Club members sign up for weekly weeding, watering and general maintenance of the garden.
