Celebrating the Town of Greece Bicentennial
To celebrate the upcoming Bicentennial of the Town of Greece in 2022, the Greece Historical Society (GHS) is planning to honor the pioneer families who settled in Greece and have called it home for generations.
GHS plans to publish a series of books with stories written by the descendants of the pioneer families who settled here during the first fifty years, 1822-1872.
This Bicentennial project will be published in November 2021. The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2021. Subsequent volumes may be added and published so as to include as many families as can be documented.
The publication will include biographical stories and photos featuring not only the more familiar families, but also those who are less well known or who have never been featured in past publications. Each family vignette will feature a photo and story highlighting their contributions to Town history.
Whether you are just starting out or you already are our family’s historian, help the Greece Historical Society to preserve your family’s legacy for future generations. Every family has a story to tell and we want to hear yours. Please visit our website: www.greecehistoricalsociety.org to learn more and to download the Questionnaire and Family Pedigree Chart to submit via email before the July deadline.
The Greece Historical Society hopes that you will start thinking of how your family came to the Town and where they settled (i.e., North Greece, Paddy Hill, along the Ridge, along the lake or the Canal, etc.). A 1872 map can be as a point of reference for landowners, but there are likely more families who can be verified that do not appear on this map.
Do you have old newspaper clippings, diaries, Bible pages, or other family memorabilia that can help you document your pre-1872 Greece family? Have you done your family’s genealogy and already have names and dates to show your family’s presence in the town?
We want to hear your stories and hope that you will contribute to this Bicentennial project. We can help you write your family story if you are a bit hesitant to do it yourself. This is not intended to be a genealogical journey, but a fun way for you and us to share your family stories and commemorate your pioneer roots in the Greece community.
The story of the town also includes early Charlotte which was incorporated as a Village in the Town of Greece in 1869. Greece was part of the Town of Gates which was in Northampton, which in 1820 had only 420 house-holds. By 1870, the number of inhabitants in the Town of Greece had increased to 4,314 individuals!
