American Revolution Grave Marker Dedication
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, a ceremony was held at Falls Cemetery honoring the five patriots of the American Revolution who are interned there: Naham Benedict (1762-1839), Phillip Caldwell (1761-1841), Charles Norton (1748-1837), James Clark (1757-1827) and Daniel Warner (1748-1839).
The program was made possible by several community groups working together. It was organized by the Rochester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, coordinated by David Richardson, 1st Vice President of the Sons of the American Revolution, hosted by RRCA/Falls Cemetery and presented with assistance from Greece Historical Society and Rochester and Irondequoit Chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution.
According to the Sons of the American Revolution’s website, “The purposes of the Sons of the American Revolution are patriotic, historical, and educational. This includes perpetuating the memory of Revolutionary War Patriots, promoting fellowship among their descendants, inspiring the community with a reverence for the principles of government founded by our forefathers, encouraging historical research of the American Revolution, preserving the records of Revolutionary War Patriots, marking the locations of the Revolution, its events and its soldiers and to serve as a patriotic, historical and education institution.”
The ceremony was attended by 50 people, and included biographies about each patriot, a history of the cemetery, a history of the Town of Greece and a rifle salute. A special certificate of appreciation was given to the Hare family for over 50 years of serving as caretakers for the cemetery. Special thanks are extended to Jo Ann Ward Snyder and Bill Sauers for their contribution to research and coordination of the ceremony.
Falls Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Monroe County with the first burial in 1811.
