Byron-Bergen students headed to 2013 Boys State and Girls State programs

Several Byron-Bergen students will participate in the American Legion Boys State New York and the American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State this summer. The Bergen American Legion has chosen the students who will represent the Byron-Bergen Central School District at the annual program this year.

Lucas Audsley, Milton Griffin, and Robert Schrenker were selected to participate in the American Legion Boys State program, held this year at SUNY Morrisville.

Representing Byron-Bergen at Empire Girls State will be Kimberly Lovett and Brittany Merrell. Paramjit Kaur Sembhi was selected as alternate. They will meet at The College at Brockport.

During the week-long event, students will have first-hand experience focusing on how government works and what it means to be a citizen. Students will “run for office, learn public speaking, create and enforce laws, and actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government in this exciting and fun summer program.”

Both programs will be held during the last week of June. Candidates must be juniors in high school meeting certain academic requirements. Consideration is given to scholastic achievements, leadership, character, honesty, and physical fitness. Representatives are chosen by the local American Legion through an interview process.
