Farmworker Day scheduled for April 13 in Brockport
On Saturday, April 13, a Farmworker Day will be held at the First Baptist Church, 124 Main Street in Brockport, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festive event celebrates the end of a speaking tour to rally support for The Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. That legislation would amend New York labor law to allow farmworkers the same labor protections currently enjoyed by other state laborers. The speaking tour began in Long Island and is crossing the state, led by Brockport resident Librada Paz, who received a prestigious award from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights for her many years of farmworker advocacy (Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald March 31, 2013.
Lunch will be served, and there will be opportunity to enjoy a traditional Mexican dance.
Paz will speak on the rights of farmworkers. She will encourage farm workers and members of the community to journey to Albany on May 13 to urge legislators to support The Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. Several migrant workers will tell their stories.
The April 13 event is free and open to all, hosted by the Rural and Migrant Ministry (RMM) with the cooperation of the Brockport Ecumenical Outreach Committee (BEOC).
