Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “A Night at the Movies”

The Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present “A Night at the Movies” on Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, located on Residence Drive on the College at Brockport campus. This dynamic concert highlights the collaboration between the Department of Theatre and Music Studies and the Film Studies program. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Under the baton of Jonathan Allentoff, the concert will feature films and film music from the silent film era to the present, Dr. Sidney Rosensweig, lecturer of film and author of “Casablanca and Other Major Films of Michael Curtiz,” will give an introduction to the films. Harold Lloyd’s “Ask Father” (1919) will be shown, with the orchestra premiering Allentoff’s new score.

Nationally recognized trumpet soloist, Buddy Colaneri, will perform Velazquez’s “Besame Mucho,” arranged for trumpet and orchestra by Dr. William Hullfish, associate professor of music emeritus at Brockport. Hullfish wrote this new arrangement to highlight Colaneri’s virtuosity on the trumpet. Buddy Colaneri has performed with the Gene Krupa band and the Louis Prima band, and is the lead trumpet in the Gateswingers Big Band. “Besame Mucho” has been featured in a number of films including “Great Expectations” and the Serbian film, “Love and other Crimes.”

The program also includes scenes and musical selections from “The Andy Griffith Show” (1960-1968), “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1956), and “Calamity Jane” (1953). The orchestra will perform the Academy Award-winning “Theme from Around the World in Eighty Days” by Victor Young and two new suites, “Suite from the Andy Griffith Show” featuring music by Earle Hagen and “Suite from Calamity Jane” featuring music by Sammy Fain, which have been restored and arranged by Allentoff for this concert.
