Hilton Cadets fall to Thomas

by Warren Kozireski

Sophomore Shawn Kimble scored three goals while senior Derek Richards had a four-point effort with one goal and three assists, but host Hilton fell to Webster-Thomas 12-9 in a boys lacrosse game played in a steady rain.

The win avenged the Titans Section V playoff overtime loss to the Cadets last spring.

The Cadets jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 1:05 of the first quarter when Kimble gathered up the rebound from a Harold Juergens shot and put it in the net over his shoulder.

With Thomas taking a 2-1 lead later in the quarter, Dante Giordano tied it from ten yards out.

The Titans took a two-goal lead in the second quarter, but Hilton roared back to tie it with first Teddy Alvarado scoring on an assist from Jared Harris and then Kimble netting his second of the game on a quick-hitter from Richards at 8:52 of the second.

Hilton senior goalie Mark Detroia made 11 saves in the first half to keep the game close, but Thomas scored four unanswered goals into the third quarter to build a four-goal lead before Giordano scored his second of the contest to pull the Cadets to within 9-6 late in the third. But Hilton then allowed a goal while man-up.

Alvarado, Giordano and Richards scored fourth quarter goals for the Cadets, but Thomas was able to run out the final two minutes after winning the ensuing and final draw.
