Hilton faithful come together to fill food shelf and fight hunger

The Hilton Food Shelf is always in need of donations. Here, St. Paul kindergartner Lucas Russell collected 100 items to donate to the shelter for his 100 Days of School project. Local churches and schools in Hilton and Parma will be pounding the pavement to make sure the local food cupboard is adequately funded and to contribute toward the worldwide hunger fight. The Hilton-Parma Community Council of Churches is sponsoring CROP Walk 2013, May 5 at 1:30 p.m. starting a St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 158 East Avenue.

The walk is open to everyone in the community and participants collect pledges to walk either a one mile or five mile trek. All money raised is used to fight hunger with 25 percent going to the Hilton Food Cupboard.

Last year the walk drew 134 participants and raised $7,500. Event Chair Rev. Jennifer Green, United Methodist Church, believes that this year’s walk will be able to build off of past success.

“Last year we were jumping in and getting our feet wet. This year I know we will turn out an even bigger segment of the community,” Green said. “This is a perfect family friendly community service project.”

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. More than five million CROP Hunger Walkers have participated in more than 36,000 CROP hunger Walks in the last two decades alone.
