Progress made on new Hamlin Library, reports town supervisor

Placement of building on site under study

The Hamlin Library Trustees report that progress on the new Hamlin Library continues. The Trustees recently determined that the actual building placement needs to be changed due to the large amount of top soil required to be removed from load bearing areas where the buried house once sat. Trustees are meeting with their architect to reevaluate positioning within the allotted leased area to be more cost effective and fulfill their promise to the residents for a taxpayer free library.

“We know that the community is as anxious as we are to see ground breaking for the new library, and we assure you that we are making progress,” said Trustee President Sue Evans. “The “Build Hamlin’s Free Library” Facebook® site is a good place to get regular updates as they unfold.”

The site of the new library is owned by the town, with plans to lease it to the Library for a 40 year term at the cost of $1. Trustees expect to begin site work in the fall, with full construction to begin in spring of 2014 and completed by October 2014, according to their architect’s projections. Original plans were to break ground in May 2013 and move in by the end of this year.

Foodlink Mobile Food Pantry to stop in Hilton

The Foodlink Mobile Food Pantry will make a stop at a Hilton location for the first time on Saturday, August 3. The Mobile Pantry is a market on wheels, filled with essential, nutritious food items, that travels to locations to serve rural and under-served areas.

The truck will be set up in front of the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street. Food will be distributed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a limit of one order per household. All families will be given the same amount of food regardless of family size.

Those who could be helped by an assortment of groceries are invited to come to the pantry and collect up to 40 pounds of free food. The Foodlink Mobile Pantry carries perishable items that change daily depending on donations to Foodlink. Fresh produce, baked goods, canned goods, dairy and meats are some of the items that have been on the truck for distribution.
