Seymour Local History Room progresses on schedule

Grand opening set for After Hours Fundraiser – Nov. 7

The Seymour Library Local History Room in Brockport has come a long way since the groundbreaking ceremony on April 18 and is still on schedule to be completed by mid-September. The purpose of the room is to provide local history organizations with a place to display items from their collections on a monthly basis as well as a central location for local history books, space for presentations and lectures, and table space, a computer and scanner for those who would like to do research.

“Thanks to Senator (Joe) Robach and Senator (Robert) Ortt, for providing grant money so that we could purchase furnishings, a projector, a computer and audio system,” said Director Carl Gouveia. The room is funded through state grants and private donations, not public tax dollars.

The first exhibits will be offered to the three municipalities that the Seymour Library serves – Brockport, Sweden and Clarkson. “The library is well-loved by the three communities it serves, which is evident through both usage and donations,” said Gouveia. The room’s display cases will then be available for use by any local history organization.

The Local History Room’s official grand opening will be held during the annual After Hours Fundraiser on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. During the event, the Donor of the Year Award is also presented. Last year’s recipient was BISCO (Brockport Integrated Service and Community Organization). Tickets will be on sale in September at the library.

“I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback and people are excited about the expansion,” said Gouveia. “Hopefully, this will increase our community’s knowledge of local history and encourage them to visit our local museums.”
