Sweden 2016 budget lowers tax rate in village and town

The Town of Sweden’s 2016 Tentative Budget lowers the tax rate in the Town outside the Village by five cents per thousand of assessed valuation and by two cents per thousand in the Village of Brockport.

A homeowner in the Village of Brockport with an assessment of $125,000 will pay $304.99 in Town taxes in 2016. That same homeowner paid $300.00 on a $125,000 home in 2008. That makes only a $4.99 (1.7%) increase over an eight-year period.

A homeowner in the Town outside the Village with an assessment of $125,000 will pay $587.92 in 2016 compared to $593.94 in 2015. In 2008 that same home was paying $553.75 in town taxes. The $34 increase over an eight-year period is mainly attributable to the highway budget – increased costs for road salt, asphalt, etc.

Some homes in the Town outside the Village have special district charges in addition to the general tax levy. Some homes have no special districts. Many special districts will also see a tax rate decrease.

“This is a very strong budget,” said Supervisor Rob Carges. “We dealt with the court system revenue loss in the current budget so that we are back to our long-term track record of little to no tax rate increase.”

“It’s important to note that Sweden and Brockport property owners will pay slightly less town taxes in 2016,” Carges continued, “but the budget retains all services currently enjoyed by our residents. That’s good for taxpayers and good for residents.”

The Town of Sweden’s tentative budget is available for public perusal on the Town’s website at www.townofsweden.org or at the Town Hall, 18 State Street.

The Board is expected to adopt the preliminary budget at its October 13 meeting and host a budget public hearing on October 27. The final budget will be adopted at some point after the public hearing
