Brockport Firefighters meet appreciative accident victim
Brockport Chiefs and Firefighters, Commissioners and EMTs all gathered in the truck bay at the Market Street firehall awaiting the arrival of twenty-one year old Douglas Hinkley Jr. who was coming to meet the crews that saved his life on a cold February morning. Doug, heading eastbound on Route 31 near Salmon Creek Road on February 15 at approximately 7:45 a.m., collided with a large crane heading westbound. Doug’s vehicle was ripped apart on impact trapping him inside the wreckage.
First arriving personnel realizing the severity of the crash, called for additional equipment and personnel from Hamlin and Spencerport Fire Departments, which allowed for a speedy extrication of the unconscious occupant. Fourteen minutes after rescue apparatus arrival, Doug was in the ambulance and on his way to the hospital, where he woke up four days later.
Doug is still being treated for his injuries though during his recovery, it became very important to him to visit those responsible for saving another person’s life; his firefighter heroes. With his mom and dad by his side, and a tear in his eye, he spoke from the heart when he thanked his heroes in person. A simple note would not do for this man who realizes without his community volunteers, he may not be here to thank anyone.
