Brockport proclaims July 7 Water Music NY Day

During their workshop session Monday, June 26, Brockport Village Board members proclaimed Friday, July 7, as Water Music NY Day in the village.

At 8 p.m. that day, The Albany Symphony will perform on a barge docked at the Welcome Center as part of the Albany Symphony Water Music NY cross-regional celebration of the bicentennial of the start of construction of the Erie Canal.

Water Music NY is making seven stops along the canal, starting in Albany on July 2 and ending on July 8 in Lockport.  Brockport is the only stop in Monroe County.

“Downtown merchants are keeping businesses open late,” Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman said. “They are projecting about 200 people attending.” She encouraged residents to attend the event.

Pieces from George Frideric Handel’s Water Music will be performed as well as the premiere performance of composer Loren Loiacono’s collaboration with the Golden Eagle String Band and Mariah Maloney Dance, inspired by local history.

The July 7 concert will cap five days of special events in the Greater Brockport community celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal Groundbreaking.

Sunday, July 2, features the weekly Village of Brockport Farmers Market. Monday, July 3, is the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Annual Independence Day Celebration with fireworks at the Community Center at dusk. Tuesday, July 4, features an Old Fashioned 4th of July at the Morgan Manning House in the village.  Thursday, July 6, is the GBDC Summer Serenades concert featuring Julie Dunlap and Jimmy Whitaker, and Friday’s Water Music NY concert which will be preceded by additional events throughout the day.
