Contractor Scams: If you are looking to have anything done to your home through a contractor, it is important that the contractor you select will do what he or she says they will do. This scam is completed by an individual claiming that they will do the work requested by you but requiring the job be paid in full before the work starts. A few tips to avoid losing your money: First, choose a reputable contractor and do not hesitate to ask for and call references. Second, do not pay for the entire job in the beginning. Set up a contract where you pay in increments as the job progresses. If you pay for a job in its entirety in the beginning, you run the risk of the contractor running away with your money. Third, pay attention to what you are paying for and ask for a detailed receipt to include labor, materials, etc. If you feel that a contractor is scamming you, a relative, or neighbor of money, don’t hesitate to call the Brockport Police.
