Scams are a growing trend as criminals attempt to steal your money without you ever knowing of it. The Brockport Police Department has had many reports of fraudulent charges by scammers and would like to offer advice on how to spot a possible scam. The first sign that you may be targeted is when receiving a call from an unknown number, or a number that has the same area code and the same first three digits. If the person on the other end of the line tells you that they need your bank account information for any reason, do not give it to them. A new scam that is being used is when the scammer tells you that you are receiving a refund from a service you may or may not have used. They will use your bank account information to drain your bank account. If you happen to fall victim to a phone scam please visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC is a resource for citizens that fall victim to a scam to help protect your identity and prevent future scams. It is also important to contact your bank and notify them of your financial loss so they can assist you in getting your money back. You may also call 9-1-1 to report the scam for documentation purposes. It should be known that making an arrest in a scam incident is near impossible due to how scammers cover their identity and are usually calling from across the country or across the ocean. The Brockport Police Department has several resources that are available to the public if you wish to learn more about potential phone scams and steps to take if you fall victim.
