New York State Updates
- Governor Cuomo’s concern continues to be the rate of hospitalizations vs the rate of total beds, ICU beds and the rate of ventilated patient. He has stated that we have approximately 53,000 hospital beds state wide, between 5,000-6,000 ventilator units, and about 3,000 ICU beds. He estimates that COVID-19 has a 45 day peak and that we could need up to 110,000 hospital beds, 30,000 ventilator units and 37,000 ICU beds.
- Waived DOH Regulations to increase beds by 50,000
- Cancelling all non-critical elective surgeries
- Strongly recommending that all remain indoors to the greatest extent to protect physical and mental health
- Today the NYS announced that 100% of the workforce needs to be reduced in office excluding essential businesses. Civil fines and mandatory closures for businesses that are not in compliance. This will go into effect Sunday 8pm.
- Strictest Rules for Most Vulnerable Groups: seniors over 70, immune-compromised people of any age, and those with underlying illnesses of any age are strongly encouraged to remain indoors and can go outside for solitary exercise. They should pre-screen all visitors and aids by taking their temperature and do not visit households with multiple people. All vulnerable persons should wear a mask when in the company of others, to the greatest extent possible, everyone in the presence of vulnerable people should wear a mask, always stay at least six feet away from individuals, do not take public transportation unless urgent and absolutely necessary.
- Young people need to not think, “I can’t get it”, This is not true. CDC: 20% of coronavirus hospitalizations are aged 20-44. In France, more than 50% of coronavirus patients in ICU are under 60 years old. Another false belief is that “I can’t transmit it if I’m not symptomatic” Wrong.
