Rochester Press-Radio Club Day of Champions dinner on hold

David Ortiz named Coca-Cola Sports Personality of the Year; westsiders to be honored

In order to encourage safe distancing and home sheltering during the coronavirus situation, the 71st Annual Rochester Press-Radio Day of Champions dinner is on hold. The club will be providing ongoing updates. 

Nicknamed “Big Papi,” David Ortiz, the slugger who helped lead the Boston Red Sox to three World Series titles, will receive the Coca-Cola Sports Personality of the Year Award, and will be joined by other sports figures and local award winners listed below:

•Major Donald Holleder Award – Ron Kampff, head coach, Webster Challenger Baseball and Co-Founder, Challenger Miracle Field

•Charlie Wagner Award – Scott Fake, Brockport High School head swimming coach

•Christine Wagner Welch Award – Cliff Devries, Rochester Institute of Technology, head diving coach

•Coach of the Year – Bobby Bates, McQuaid Jesuit, varsity football coach 

•Eddie and Kevin Meath Member Award – Jamie Hammond, General Manager, Rochester Regional Health Total Sports Experience

•Elliot Cushing Award – Scott Fitch, Fairport High School, head boys varsity basketball coach

•ESL Community Volunteer Award – William Weir, Al Sigl Community of Agencies volunteer

•Gary Smith and George Beahon Sports Media Excellence Award – James Johnson, Democrat and Chronicle, High School sports writer

•High School Female Press-Radio Athlete of the Year – Julia Andreach, Our Lady of Mercy High School, tennis

•High School Male Press-Radio Athlete of the Year – Sam Lawler, Pittsford-Mendon High School, cross country/distance runner

•Jean Giambrone Award – Linda Michele, St. John Fisher College, head women’s lacrosse coach

•Jerry Flynn College Award – Rachel Benedict, Nazareth College, basketball

•Local Amateur Athlete Award – Jared Conners, University of Virginia, men’s lacrosse  (Pittsford-Mendon High School), Chloe DeLyser, soccer, Marion Central School

•Local Professional Athlete Award – Danny Mendick, Chicago White Sox, baseball (Pittsford-Mendon High School and Monroe Community College)

•Morrie Silver Award – Don Murray, The College at Brockport, head wrestling coach

•Rich Funke Jr. College Award – Conlan Keenan, SUNY Geneseo, ice hockey.
