Sweden waives exemption renewal requirement
In mid-December, New York State granted towns the authority to waive exemption renewal filings. At its December 29 meeting, the Sweden Town Board directed the Sweden Assessor to grant 2021 exemptions to all property owners who received the exemption in 2020. The assessor may require a renewal application to be filed if she believes that the owner has changed primary residences, added another owner to the deed, transferred the property to a new owner, or died.
“Most exemptions carry forward from year-to-year,” said Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson, “and most are granted to seniors or property owners with a disability. It makes sense that during the pandemic, when seniors are trying to limit in-person transactions, that we waive this renewal paperwork.”
Questions about exemptions in the Town of Sweden should be addressed to the Assessor at 637-8683.
