Jensen introduces legislation to give residents initiative and referendum

Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece) has introduced legislation that would enact a constitutional amendment to provide residents of New York with the power of initiative and referendum (A.4674). Initiative is the power of the electors to propose amendments to both the constitution and statutes, while referendum is the power of the electors to approve or reject statutes or parts of statutes. Proposals that qualify would go directly on the ballot.

“I’m proud to sponsor this bill that allows the residents of New York to vote on bills to become law. Having their input and say in what bills become state law is such a crucial part of our democracy. Their voices and opinions deserve to be heard,” said Jensen. “It’s an honor to be able to sponsor this bill and give our residents a direct say in what bills are implemented in our state.”
