Youth invited to participate in Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County 4-H program is taking part in the 2021 National 4-H Ag Innovators Experience. The experience trains local teen leaders to teach younger children how to apply STEM skills to address real-life agriculture problems. This year’s lesson is “Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge.”

The lesson, created by the National 4-H Council and Bayer, is being offered to youth in third through eighth grade in Monroe County. It challenges youth to use STEM skills to solve a real-world issue while also driving them toward awareness of and interest in agriculture innovation and agriculture careers. Participants will explore this topic through hands-on activities presented by four trained teen leaders.

In this collaborative and interactive challenge, youth can expect to:

•Learn how human activities increase atmospheric carbon and contribute to climate change.

•Plan a carbon-friendly meal by selecting foods with low carbon footprints.

•Identify carbon-friendly actions that agriculture, business and industry, and individuals and families can take to reduce atmospheric carbon.

•Identify STEM/agriculture careers that connect to the environment and carbon reduction.

The “Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge” is offered to any interested youth on Thursday, April 29, from 5 to 6 p.m. Register for this free, virtual program at https://bit.ly/3u8Pb1d.

This lesson can also be offered in school and community settings. Those interested in experiencing the one-hour, teen-led virtual program with a class or youth group should contact Lori Koenick at lbk75@cornell.edu to set a time and date.
